Overnight Oats Basic Recipe Guide

Overnight oats are healthy, delicious, and a make-ahead easy breakfast! And you will never get bored of eating it because the possibilities are endless as there are several different flavours that you can add to make it interesting and tasty.

Weekday breakfast for F is always yoghurt parfaits because he leaves too early and is not ready to eat proper food at that hour. I make these parfaits and spoon feed him while he gets ready to work. I found overnight oats when I was looking for cold breakfast options. I was so glad to know something that does NOT require cooking!

Overnight Oats What are overnight oats?

They are simply a no-cook method of making oats. Instead of cooking the oatmeal on the stovetop or in the microwave bowl, you just soak the raw oats in any kind of milk and refrigerate. The soaking time allows the oats to absorb the liquid and in the process soften them enough so that it can be eaten uncooked. The add-ins like fruits, nuts and seeds make it delicious the way you want.

Do you eat overnight oats hot or cold?

Overnight oats are served chilled, straight from the refrigerator which makes it perfect for warmer months, but if you are the kind who loves ice cream in winter that you certainly can enjoy overnight oats year-round!

What type of oats is best for overnight oats?

I can boldly state that any type of oats is okay as far as you like the end texture. Overnight oats are usually prepared with rolled oats, old fashioned oats or whole oats. But I started making them with quick-cooking oats and I truly have a soft corner for it. But once I got my hands on rolled oats, I felt it was more filling than the quick-cooking oats.

Are overnight oats healthy?

There is no yes or no answer for this but definitely leans towards the healthier side unless you add refined sugar which should be in moderation.

So, if you want to give oats a second chance, here is a basic idea of making overnight oats. You prepare the base and refrigerate overnight. Add your choice to toppings and scoop and eat! Keep 2 to 3 parts of liquid for 1 part of oats.

  • 1 teaspoon of any jam
  • 1/2 teaspoon stevia
  • The choice is yours!
Toppings/Add-ins
  • Choice of fruits (banana, apple, berries, etc)
  • Choice of mixed nuts or seeds

How to make overnight oats?

METHOD:

  1. Take a glass or mug and add the base ingredients along with your choice of sweetener and mix well
  2. Cover and keep refrigerated overnight of 6 to 8 hours
  3. When you want to eat, take it out and add your choice of toppings and mix well and enjoy!
TIPS:
  • When adding avocado, to prevent it from browning, mix it with the yoghurt.
  • You can also add a tablespoon of desiccated coconut with banana and berries, I bet you will love it.
  • Dash of cardamom powder or cinnamon powder will also add flavour
  • Feel free to add more milk if you prefer a looser consistency
This helps mostly the people who have to rush to work, they can take this along and eat on the way.. and others like me full time at home, can still make this ahead and have any time. I usually eat my share for lunch. There is no rule, apart from the base.
