Overnight Oats

December 13, 2015

Overnight oats are healthy, delicious, and a make-ahead breakfast! And you will never get bored of eating it because there are several different flavours that you can add to make it interesting and tasty!

Weekday breakfast for F is always yoghurt parfaits because he leaves too early and is not ready to eat proper food at that hour. I make these parfaits and spoon feed him while he gets ready to work. I found overnight oats when I was looking for cold breakfast options. I was so glad to know something that does NOT require cooking!

As usual, I found it first on Raf's blog. This is prepared with rolled oats or old fashioned oats or whole oats. They were all a new term to me. You can read this article to learn the differences. I had only quick cooking oats as rolled oats are not available in the supermarkets here. Ever since I started making these overnight oats, I never got bored of it!

Overnight Oats

So, if you want to give oats a second chance, here is a basic idea of making overnight oats. You prepare the base and refrigerate overnight. Add your choice to toppings and scoop and eat! Keep 3 parts of liquid for 1 part of oats.

Overnight Oats | Four Steps

1/4 cup oats (any type)
1/4 cup milk (any type)
1/4 cup yoghurt or laban or greek or labneh
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon of chia seeds or flax seeds (optional but recommended)

Sweetener: (choose one)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon Nutella
  • 1 tablespoon Biscoff
  • 1 teaspoon of any jam
  • 1 teaspoon of any flavoured syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon stevia
  • The choice is yours!

  • Choice of fruits
  • Choice of mixed nuts or seeds

  • When adding Avocado to prevent it from browning, mix it with the yoghurt.
  • You can also add a tablespoon of desiccated coconut with banana and berries, I bet you will love it.
  • Dash of cardamom powder or cinnamon powder will also add flavour

  1. Take a glass or mug and add the base ingredients along with your choice of sweetener and mix well
  2. Cover and keep refrigerated overnight of 6 to 8 hours
  3. When you want to eat, take it out and add your choice of toppings and mix well and enjoy!

This helps mostly the people who have to rush to work, they can take this along and eat on the way.. and others like me full time at home, can still make this ahead and have any time. I usually eat my share for lunch. There is no rule, apart from the base.
