Month that was, November 2018
November started with the heaviest rainfall in the city that actually brought water into our flat, a downside of living on the same floor as the terrace. It seeped through the two main doors we have (Saudi homes have two main doors - one for family and the other for guests or male guests) and moved into the living room wetting everything on the way. Alhamdulillah, the rain didn't continue for too long nor came again with the same vigour. I have noticed, every year we have only one day of heavy rainfall preceded and followed by sandstorms and winds.
Falafel Recipe on my Highlights
We are trying to get the cats to sleep off our bed so before the lights are off, I send them out and close the door. But I couldn't do it consistently and in the middle of the night, I would go looking for them :-)
I can't quite explain why I have this love for Lebanese food but I am sure I am never growing out of love for it. My first every cookbook I bought was Everyday Lebanese Cooking by Mona Hamdeh and I have so many more dishes to try from it. This month I took up to try the popular Levant rice dish, Maqloubeh.
My first attempt in making chicken and eggplant upside down rice or more popularly called #makloubeh in Lebanese style! 😊😋 Swipe for more images. Recreated from @mona_hamadeh_lebanese_food #everydaylebanesecooking It can be made with any meat or vegetables and is served with yogurt! 😋😋😋😋 Though the national dish of Palestine, you can find variations of maqlooba across middle east. #arabicfood #nationaldish #makloubeh #maklube #maqloubeh #maqlooba
Frozen Mango No-churn Ice cream
Do you crave ice cream in cold weather? We do.
Bowl of Oats
When all options die, we are always ready for a bowl of oats. Zaatar is reluctant to move even when the bowl of oats is of no interest to him. :-D
My first task after waking up is to feed them!
I don't have many pictures of this darling boy who did not give up and is healing so well. Shaiba, you remind me I can be stronger and happier with whatever I have!
South Indian Falafel aka Parippu Vada
Weekend Breakfast Idea - Cold Egg Sandwich
Throwback to the simple minimal ingredients boiled #eggsandwich - butter, salt and freshly ground pepper. Inspired by @bongeats Indian Coffee House Egg Sandwich... Even if the recipe was something we already know, her videos are a treat to ears and eyes. The background music, the chopping board sounds everything will keep you glued. Go watch them on Youtube if not already... Happy Weekend!
Flavours of Malabar - Kakka Orotti
#kakkaorotti Mini steamed #ricedumpling soaked in spicy meat curry rich with roasted coconut paste and curry leaves. Back home, this dish brings all the ladies of the home together in the kitchen... each contributing to rolling the dumplings while catching up with latest neighbourhood news. I remember as a kid watching my aunts and grandmas with oiled palms rolling away the kakkaorotti while incessantly talking and laughing together! I dont know if this tradition will continue with our generation... 😞 but if you are interested in trying this, the recipe is in the blog. 😋 Happy Weekend! #moplahcuisine #malabarfood #nostaliga #familytraditions #recreatinghomefood
Persimmons are here
I got my hands on a few #persimmons and patiently waited for one to ripe while the rest stayed in fridge. It took a few days for it to become like a balloon filled with water... (sign of it getting ripe) I couldn’t wait any longer than that! The sunshine jewels dressed my trusted oats that I cooked in water, flavoured with #obw and #butter Also the dried #gojiberries #almonds and #chiaseeds 😋 that made persimmons shine even more! Don’t ya agree? And oh, zaatar in the frame making the most of the winter sun!
Veg Fried Rice with Chicken Manchurian
Tea Flavoured Granola
Remember the #ladygreygranola or #teaflavoured #granola that I have been testing for a while... ??? This picture was the last testing which turned out perfectly good. I wanted to share the recipe but waited to check its shelf life. On the third day the granola’s texture changed putting me right back to experimenting phase. I am now convinced that it is better to make a small batch and enjoy your favourite tea flavoured granola! I shall share the recipe on highlights by tomorrow InshaAllah.
Umma's Louki Curry
Veg Tehri Craze
One of the many Tehri I made...
#vegtahiri or #vegtehri studded with pomegranate served with #chickencutlets and some yogurt. I don’t think this dish is very different from our veg pulao but I read that this is made with season’s fresh harvest and so the vegetables used varies. Using mostly cauliflower and potatoes. Anyways for those who want to make it, recipe is already in the highlights...😋 #indianfood #rice #deepfriedgoodness #lunchideas
Chocolate Eclair Pudding
When I learnt that #falafels can be part of your “salad” too 😊 With this beautiful weather comes gloomy light so I had to take my bowl outside to the open and click pictures! 😄 There are numerous falafel recipes out there but you should look for one that has no flour added! Recipe in highlights! #falafelbowl #middleeasternfood #deepfried #saladbowl #labnehdip
Kerala Style Chicken Cutlet
A Kerala Style #chickencutlets that I make very often if not meatballs because I don’t like chicken breasts in curry or biryani or pulao. They simply don’t deserve to be in them... 🙄but they are an excellent choice for these bite size treats! 😋Freezer friendly for two weeks! Recipe in highlights!! 😍 #keralafood #keralasnacks #keralacuisine #chicken #curryleaves #meatfulldays #cutlets
Dal Gosht with Boneless Beef
#dalgosht is thick gravy of meat and #lentils with flavours from freshly ground whole spice mix. Gets tastier as it sits and goes well with both rice and breads! This time I had made with boneless beef. Recipe with step by step pictures is on the highlights. 😋 Btw, this is not something my moms family makes but I did see my mil make with added vegetables and she calls it erachi sambar! #indianfood #beefcurry #foodporn #indiancuisine #wholespices #foodphotography #iphonephotography #nofilter #lunchideas #homemadefood
Sunrise Point - Yanbu Al Nakhal
Protein filled Upma
4th HBD to MLY
My little blog that I have conveniently ignored turned four today! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼For the first time I have not posted a celebration post. 😬 👎🏼But all your loving messages to continue blogging pushed me to bake a cake! Apparently today is #worldcakeday too! 😍😄 Here is my mini #tahinicake made in pressure cooker and devoured with some black coffee! Recipe courtesy @potsnbites
Lime Pickle as Edible Gifts
There are very few good restaurants that are family friendly here in Yanbu! If you don’t know already, Saudi Arabian restaurants have two sections... singles and family. If the food is good, the seatings are cramped, if interior is great, the food sucks etc... so we mostly rely on take aways... but today we tried @_sham.gododna even though google rating is 3.8 and mixed reviews, we had to try! We loved everything about the place, decor, service, food, etc. only drawback was no one knew English, no english menu, so we don’t know the names of the dish! Lol 😂 also, the pricing is higher than other restaurants serving similar food! Food for two: ~270 SAR #yanbuhighlights #yanbu_restaurants #arabicfood #turkishfood #lunching
